TOWARDS NEW SECTORS OF ACTIVITIES
HIGH TECHNICITY
As an enabling technology, photonics touches on strategic elements of our modern industry, from automotive and medicine to aerospace. New high-tech sectors of activity are also emerging and are based on the use we make of our knowledge of the sciences of light, in particular for the deployment of future quantum technologies or, for example, that of a metaverse in augmented and/or virtual reality.
Beyond these well-identified and widely popularized applications on a general public scale, photonics has considerable advantages for the control and monitoring of complex, rapidly evolving or multi-parameter systems, making it a technology particularly well suited for agri-food monitoring or medical diagnosis. The emergence of these new technologies therefore places photonics at the heart of major scientific and industrial issues both locally and internationally. The sectors of economic activity impacted by these developments are growing rapidly and the need to recruit qualified personnel in this field of specialty is increasing accordingly. Supporting the growth of this industrial sector through research, education and innovation is therefore a challenge for the academic world.
In this context, our Masters aim to support the growth of this sector by offering a tailored training offering that draws on both the resources of research laboratories at the forefront of academic research and the skills of teaching teams made up of teacher-researchers and researchers internationally recognized for their expertise.

Are you a student looking for training in optics and photonics? Do you want to learn how to use optical fibers and lasers? Do you want to know everything about integrated photonics and quantum technologies? Are you fascinated by the Sciences of Light and Modern Physics? Join one of our training courses!
MASTER PPN – PHYSICS, PHOTONICS & NANOTECHNOLOGY
A high-level training offer through research and professional integration
in the academic and industrial fields at the forefront of innovation exploiting the
concepts of modern physics and the Sciences of Light.
Educational content:
The PPN Master’s degree covers the fundamental and practical aspects of Laser Physics and Femtosecond Technologies, Guided Optics and Optical Communications, Mechanics and Quantum Technologies, as well as Nanosciences and Nanotechnologies.
The disciplinary content is delivered using modern theoretical, numerical and instrumental tools, drawing on the resources of the Carnot Interdisciplinary Laboratory of Burgundy and the SMARTLIGHT and ARCEN-CARNOT platforms.
At the end of the training, students graduating from the PPN Master’s degree have solid theoretical and practical knowledge in optics, photonics, quantum physics, lasers and the implementation of their applications in several high-tech sectors. They are familiar with the techniques commonly used in the microelectronics, optical communications and lasers industry and have acquired the basics of the physicochemical principles governing the behavior of solid, crystalline, amorphous and organic materials, whether micro and nano structured or not.
Training opportunities
Continuation of studies in a doctoral thesis in order to then access academic careers (researcher, teacher-researcher) in France and internationally or to join a Research and Development department in industry.
Integration into the professional world as a Research and Development Engineer, or an equivalent position with scientific and technical responsibilities.
Training modalities
The entire training is provided in English.
In M1, the training is open to initial and continuing training.
In M2, the training is open to initial, continuing and work-study training.
IN WORK-STUDY (apprenticeship contract or professionalization contract), the disciplinary teachings are provided in a hybrid face-to-face/distance format by the teaching team in order to allow work-study students to follow the training remotely when their company is located outside the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region.

MASTER E-PHOT
A comprehensive course program covering theoretical, experimental and engineering aspects of photonics, micro and nanotechnologies, time-frequency metrology, information theory and complex systems.
Educational content:
The E-phot master’s degree is delivered by the University of Franche-Comté (UBFC) in Besançon.
Its aim is to cover a selection of subjects at the interface between physics and engineering sciences. This master’s degree also offers complementary disciplinary and interdisciplinary courses, as well as digital, societal, cultural, environmental and entrepreneurial skills in the broad sense.
It is open to students who have studied physics, and its aim is to provide them with additional training so that they can then pursue a career in industry or continue with a doctorate.
The ephot master’s degree has a CMI-labeled curriculum (“Cursus master en Ingénierie”), a national label of excellence in engineering and research delivered by the CMI-FIGURE network, which includes 28 French universities.
Training objective:
To train researchers and/or engineers in the physical phenomena underlying new technologies, both on a practical and fundamental level (industry and research), in areas such as photonics, micro and nano-optics, quantum optics, micro-nanotechnologies, instrumentation, time-frequency, micro-oscillators, micro- and nano-acoustics, bio-photonics, and complex systems using these disciplines.
Opportunities
Teacher-researcher, researcher or engineer in the academic world.
Research and development engineer, study engineer in a private company.
Technical and commercial manager in the industrial field.

MASTER QUANTEEM
Erasmus Mundus Master in Quantum Technologies and Engineering
An international master’s degree offering high-level training in the rapidly expanding field of quantum technologies.
Educational content:
Funded by the European Union as part of the Erasmus Mundus action of the Erasmus+ program, the QuanTEEM master’s degree is supported by a consortium of three European universities: the University of Burgundy (coordinator) in Dijon, France, Rheinland-Pfälzische Technische Universität in Kaiserslautern, Germany and Aarhus Universitet in Denmark and involves international student mobility between the different universities in the consortium.
Drawing on the expertise, resources and scientific equipment present in the laboratories of the three partner universities, the Interdisciplinary Carnot de Bourgogne laboratory in Dijon, the Center for Complex Quantum Systems in Aarhus and the Department of Physics in Kaiserslautern, as well as on numerous cooperations with its industrial partners, the QuanTEEM master’s degree offers comprehensive training in quantum technologies, taught entirely in English, ranging from fundamental aspects to applications.
Program
The Master’s program offers advanced courses that are mainly structured around the four recognized pillars of quantum technologies: quantum computing and computation, quantum communications, quantum simulations, quantum sensors and metrology. More interdisciplinary aspects concerning the fields where quantum technologies are beginning to find applications, such as information technology, chemistry, health or economics, are also addressed. The program is organized around different specialization choices, which define different mobility paths during the Master’s degree.
Training opportunities
Integration into the many companies active in the field of quantum technologies, whether they are start-ups developing quantum technologies, or research teams within large companies in various fields (health, automotive, banking, etc.) interested in potential applications of quantum technologies.
Continuation of thesis studies in academic or private research laboratories in order to then access academic careers (researcher, teacher-researcher) in France and internationally or to join a Research and Development department in industry.
Creation of start-ups.
